At least 16 female protesters were arrested by Sudanese security agents during demonstrations they staged outside the Omdurman Women’s Prison Thursday, according to a source.
The protestors were demanding the release of the deputy chairperson of the National Umma Party (NUP) Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi as part of the No To Oppression of Women Initiative.
Several eyewitnesses told Radio Tamazuj Thursday that the police used tear gas and batons to disperse the protests before arresting the women.
The protesters were holding signs demanding the immediate release of al-Mahdi, according to the same source.
al-Mahdi was arrested on 12 August upon her arrival from the French capital Paris after signing the Paris Declaration with the Sudanese Revolutionary Forces (SRF).
