Students in South Sudan’s Central Upper Nile State have for the first time in 5 years, joined the rest of the country as they sit for the national secondary school examinations.

The State Education Minister Peter Kuol Chol told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that 56 students are currently taking their exams in Malakal town and Akoka centers. The examinations started on Monday across the country.

“This is the first exam in five years’ time in our state. We don’t have a big number, only 31 students are sitting their exam in Malakal town, while 25 students are sitting in Akoka,” he explained.

He said 4 of the candidates are from the UN-run protection of civilians’ sites in Malakal.

“Teachers have worked with them and finished the required syllabus. So, I don’t think there are challenges facing them,” he noted.

Center Upper Nile state is one of the most affected regions by the conflict which began in 2013.
