Students boycott exams to protest arrested teachers in Bor town

Students at Malek Secondary School in Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have refused to sit for examinations in protest against the arrest of dozens of teachers who went on strike to demand unpaid salaries and promotions.

In late November, security agents arrested over 30 members of the striking teacher’s committee in Bor town.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Woi Mabior, deputy headmaster of the Malek Secondary School, said that the students refused to sit for examinations yesterday in protest against the arrest of their teachers by the security recently.

“Yes, those children have boycotted the exams because the exams were not prepared by their teachers. The teachers who set the exams were not the teachers who taught them, so they said that their teachers are in the prison for unknown reasons,” said Mabior.

Mabior pointed out that the protesting students rejected to receive exam papers from new teachers deployed to the school.
