Customs clearance agents have gone on strike in Nimule, Eastern Equatoria, stranding hundreds of trucks at the border checkpoint between South Sudan and Uganda.
The Nimule Clearance Agencies’ Union staged a strike saying that the customs authorities in Nimule were collecting taxes illegally.
President of the clearance agencies in Nimule, Bartholomew Riak, told Miraya FM that the reason for their strike was “illegal collection of money being made by the customs officers without any receipt given to the agents.”
“There is no receipt being given to us and the customs officers are collecting money illegally,” he stressed.
Bartholomew explained this “brought a very big complaint from all the businessmen,” pointing out that the international investors needed receipts.
The customs clearance agent also complained that the Customs Service had set up a fence to block agents from entering their premises in Nimule.
He further added, “Even taxes are not uniformly collected in the country. Kaya is different from Nimule. Nimule is different from Nadapol. Nadapol is different from Nisitu.”
