Street families affected by floods in Bor

Families living in shops along streets in Bor have been affected by floods from a day’s rain on Sunday. The families comprising of children, elderly women and men are still struggling to find belongings that floated away.

The current floods in the town were caused by the morning rains which lasted for several hours since 10:00, causing people to stay indoors and halting market activities.

Angeth Kuol, a mother of two said they have nowhere to go and shelter with her desperate children since she was in her village before the civil war but she feared going back to village due to increasing insecurity. She said she will struggle in her flooded shop till it is dry.

“What can I do when everywhere in the town is not free, I was safe in my village and in Awerial when we were there but due to this floods and bad nature of this street have made it worse for us to live,” Kuol said on Sunday after the rains stopped.

Several families living such a life are found along main streets in the town. Another elderly man who was busy bailing water from his shop that doubles as his house told Radio Tamazuj that he was not sure how it would feel like during the night which he anticipated to be ‘sleepless’.

“Am not thinking I will sleep because of what you have seen with your eyes, this water will go and the ground will be wet, that is why I say the night will be sleepless, it was ok when we were in our tents in Guolyar but now it has become worse due to the bad rain like today,” he said.

Bor Town has a history of flooding when it rains. Every year civilians are displaced by rain and overflows from the River Nile. The government has been trying to reduce such floods but their work has not been completely successful.
