Street children on rise in Ethiopia’s Sherkole camp

The numbers of street children have increased within Sherkole camp (Kubri Khamsa) for Sudanese refugees in western Ethiopia, while some humanitarian organizations are working to address the phenomenon.

The numbers of street children have increased within Sherkole camp (Kubri Khamsa) for Sudanese refugees in western Ethiopia, while some humanitarian organizations are working to address the phenomenon.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Bolis the supervisor of Sherkole camp for Blue Nile refugees said there is a rising number of homeless children in the area.

He put the number at more than 200 children from Blue Nile state. Another 50 South Sudanese children are currently living without guardians in the camp.

He further revealed that Save the Children organization and the Administration for Refugees Affairs in collaboration with the other humanitarian organizations operating in the camp are working to register the street children so that they can be reintegrated into communities in the refugee camp.
