State wrestling boss quits after clash with minister

Lakes State Chairperson of the Wrestling Association Gabriel Madol Ayuom resigned hours after the local Youth, Culture and Sports Minister William Koji Kirjok ordered his suspension.

Ayuom was suspended on Tuesday after he ordered the removal of the Yirol East Wrestling Association Chairperson, William Mayor Bok, from his position on September 17.

In what appeared to be a show of power, Kirjok reinstated Bok and suspended Ayuom.

On resigning, Ayuom said he had been embarrassed by the minister.

“If we are working according to the constitution, he should not reinstate the person I removed. That is a humiliation before the public. He should have called and investigated why I removed him because I was not acting contrary to our State wrestling policies,” he said.

Kirjok confirmed Ayuom’s resignation but downplayed its significance. He described it as normal and not requiring a lot of discussion.

“It is an administrative issue, there is nothing and it is normal,” he said

The cause of the misunderstanding between Ayuom and Kirjok remains unclear but could be linked to last month’s wrestling contest in which Majok Siko from Yirol East was defeated by giant wrestler Akol Agok from Bor County of Jongeli State.
