A soldier identified as Akwer Kur, 22, attached to the SSPDF’S Fifth Infantry Division was on Tuesday killed by his brother in the Nazareth suburb of Wau town in Western Bahr el Ghazal State.
According to Brigadier General Awuw Nyiriel Dawol, the acting police commissioner in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, the case was reported to the police on Tuesday morning after the soldier was killed while fighting with his brother.
“On 6 June we received a report of a murder case from somebody called Alfred Deng who is an official and the case was that Unguec Kur Uchalla fought with his brother (Akwer Kur) and the latter died. We brought the culprit on the same day and he is now detained at Wau Police Station,” he said. “No one knows what triggered the fight between the brothers but when the deceased’s body was taken to the hospital, the medical report said his neck was broken.”
“According to the information I received, the deceased soldier was an artillery gunner who suffered from depression,” Gen. Nyiriel added.
He said investigations are ongoing since the killer was apprehended.
Meanwhile, a family member, Alfred Deng, said the row was instigated by the deceased soldier who came home drunk and tried to pick his sister’s clothes from the house to go and sell them.
“The problem was that Akwer came home drunk and entered the room and picked up the clothes of his sister and he was trying to go and sell them. This is how the problem started,” he said. “Unguec was not at home but when he returned, he found Akwer (deceased) harassing their sister. Unguec asked Akwer to stop but the latter replied that he was even waiting for and was ready to fight him.”
