A major with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) has been arrested by the police for shooting dead a civilian in Bor town of Jonglei State on Monday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Akon Deng Anyieth, a resident of Bor town.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, State Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Elia Costa Faustino said the incident occurred following a quarrel between the soldier and the civilian.
“What happened was that a car splashed water on a pedestrian who happens to be a major in the army. This resulted in a heated exchange between these two people,” Maj. Gen. Elia narrated. “The furious officer then removed his pistol and shot dead the civilian.”
The police officer added, “We immediately intervened and arrested him. He is now under police custody, undergoing an investigation. “
The state police commissioner appealed for calm as investigations continue, pending arraignment before a claw od court.
Article 206 of the South Sudan Penal Code says whoever causes the death of another person commits the offence of murder and, upon conviction, be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life and may also be liable to a fine, provided that if the nearest relatives of the deceased opt for customary blood compensation.
