A cameraman for South Sudan’s state television in Rumbek has been arrested by authorities after failing to cover a government activity, according to journalists’ association.

John Wulu Deng, Chairperson of the Greater Lakes State Journalists’ Association (GLSJA), told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the authorities on Saturday afternoon arrested Mabor Marual Chawuol, a cameraman for South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) in Western Lakes State.

“Gabriel Mabor Marual was arrested simply because he could not arrive on time to cover some events in Malual-Akan area where feeder road construction was taking place,” said Wulu.

According to Wulu, the cameraman arrived in the construction site late due to lack of mobility and rains.

Wulu appealed to Governor John Deng Mamer to release Gabriel who is detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The family also confirmed the arrest of Gabriel by security forces.

Government officials in Western Lakes could not immediately be reached for comment.

South Sudan’s constitution requires detainees to be produced before a court within 24 hours.
