Sporadic gunfire in South Sudan’s Wau throughout Sunday

Random shooting spread across Wau town in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state, witnesses said.

The shooting started in the morning outside of town but also took place inside until evening hours.

A woman residing in the area told Radio Tamazuj the shooting erupted at Hai Basia and Busary checkpoint this morning and later this afternoon gunshots were also heard inside the town near Bagari Jedit and Hai Costi area.

The same source confirmed that she saw SPLA forces moving toward the checkpoint after the gunshots.

Another source within Hai Costi said the fighting there happened between three soldiers and as a result one of them pick up gun and opened fire against two soldiers.

That source could not say whether the two survived, but within minutes saw three military trucks heading to the site of the shooting.

After the incident many sources confirmed that citizens from Hai Costi and surrounding neighborhood ran to church compounds for safety.

Meanwhile, inside town, shooting started when SPLA deputy chief of general staff Mangar Buong, who is also the member of the investigative committee sent to Wau to look into the violence of last month, told the congregations during Sunday service at a church that he ordered the army out of Wau town.

Mangar said the internal security should be under the responsibility of police and military police, not the army.

Radio Tamazuj contacted many government officials but they failed to speak on the issue.

The shooting in Wau stopped around the late afternoon when Mangar and the local governor went to the place of the shooting.
