SPLM team arrives Torit ahead of secretary general’s visit

An advance team from the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) headquarters in Juba arrived in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, on Tuesday ahead of a planned visit by the party’s acting secretary-general.

An advance team from the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) headquarters in Juba arrived in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, on Tuesday ahead of a planned visit by the party’s acting secretary-general. 

Peter Lam Both, the acting SPLM secretary-general, is expected to arrive in Torit in 5 days to reorganize the party among other activities. 

Hundreds of party members converged at Fotur-Mafi junction along the Torit-Magwi-Juba highway to welcome the delegation on Tuesday evening.

Bol Makweny, a leading SPLM member who was part of the advance team said they were grateful for the warm welcome and that their mission was to reorganize the party which has a historical following in Torit.  

“Our mission in Eastern Equatoria is the reorganization of SPLM, that is what we call the SPLM renaissance,” Makweny explained. “So, on behalf of this team, I am very happy to say that your reception is warmly accepted and we are happy to be with you. The program is going to be successful because Torit has always been an SPLM stronghold in our history.”

Another member of the delegation, Abuk Payiti Ayii, the SPLM nominated chairperson of the specialized committee for health in the national assembly urged women to fully participate in the political process.

“I am very happy to be here in Torit town. Torit is a historical place and I am very happy that we are going to get the SPLM here 100 percent,” Hon. Payiti said. “My message for you women is because we are voters during elections together with the youth plus our elders, we have a big vote and we can bring about a difference.”

German Charles Ojok, the Eastern Equatoria State SPLM party secretary-general welcomed the delegation to the state and assured them of safety.

“Thank you for coming to this state. Our comrades in this state, our trees, the animals in the bushes, and all our mountains are welcome you,” Ojok said. “You coming with this great team will give us enough rain. You are most welcome.”
