SPLM-North declines Carter Center’s workshop on peace in Nairobi

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-North) said that it has declined to attend a workshop organized by the Carter Center in Nairobi to discuss the peace process in Sudan.

The Center announced that the workshop aims to explore ways to bring about peace in Sudan and that the initiative is not part of the African Union mediation.

In a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj, the SPLA-North said that they declined to participate in the workshop due to the government’s continued use of food as weapons and rejection to open humanitarian corridors.

The rebel group accused the Khartoum government of targeting local residents in the Two Areas on racial bases. It pointed out that the SPLA-North leadership has decided to stop political contacts with the government to prioritize humanitarian issues over political matters.

The group called for investigations into alleged use of chemical weapons use by the Sudanese government in Darfur, claiming there are signs that it might have also been used in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions.
