A leading member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement –North (SPLM-N), a rebel group that has been fighting against the Khartoum government since 2011, has expressed optimism about the ability of the movement’s leadership to solve its differences.
Over the past two weeks, the SPLM-N deputy chairman Abdel-Aziz Adam Al-Hilu tendered his resignation due to sharp differences within the ranks of top leadership.
Awatif al-Tom, who is former Sudanese minister of social development in South Kordofan state, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that she expects that the SPLM-N leadership would be able to settle its differences through the ongoing consultative meetings in the Nuba Mountains.
She pointed out that the council’s recent decision to withdraw confidence from the secretary general of the SPLM-N and dissolve the negotiating team with Sudan’s government was prompted by the resignation of the movement’s deputy chairman Abdel Aziz al-Hilu.
“I think the resignation of al-Hilu has prompted the Liberation Council to sit and come up with these decisions. The chair of Yasir Arman is not forever, people come and go but the fact remains, and he is still a member of the SPLM-N,” she said.
Both Malik Agar, the SPLM-N chairman and Yassir Arman are in the Nuba Mountains to discuss the movement’s internal wrangles.
