SPLM leaders object to Ngok agreement with Misseriya

A number of Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) leaders in Abyei area expressed reservations about the memorandum of understanding that was signed at the end of last week between the leaders of the Dinka Ngok and the leaders of the Misseriya. Their objections put them at odds with tribal leaders of the Ngok Dinka.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj about the memorandum of understanding agreement signed in Abyei last week, Rowo Majak spokesperson for the SPLM Abyei stated that the majority of Ngok people in the area do not refuse in-principle coexistence with Misseriya, but express reservations.

Majak explained that the agreement was supposed to be proceeded first by an apology and declaration of good intentions by the Misseriya.

He attributed the reason for their reservations to the alleged role the Misseriya played in Abyei attacks of 1965, 1972, 1987, 2008 and May 2011, and there had to be a declaration of good intentions first.

The presence of the Sudanese troops in Abyei till now is another of the reasons for the reservations, Majak said, and he also added that the agreement is twisting the truth, and pointed out to the importance of linking this agreement with the final solution of Abyei problem.

Hamad Deng, an activist from Abyei, described the entrance into this agreement as a big historic mistake, and agreed with Majak that the agreement should come only after Misserya declared their good intentions and full recognition of Dinka Ngok as the only natives of Abyei.

Deng also stated that this agreement minimized things done by Misserya that Dinka Ngok are still suffering from. He claimed that most of the Dinka Ngok people do not accept the agreement.

Majak added that all these factors are enough to make the agreement fail before the announcement of good intentions, and expressed his fears of the Misserya’s abrogation of any agreement with them.
