The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has welcomed the victory of President Omar al-Bashir in the recent Sudanese general elections.
SPLM-IO deputy head of information and public relations Manawa Peter Gatkuoth told Radio Tamazuj in an interview that they welcome the election results.
He further said the Sudanese government under the leadership of Omar al-Bashir will contribute towards bringing about peace in South Sudan.
“Any political transformations in Sudan always affect South Sudan either positively or negatively, that’s why we welcomed the victory of President al-Bashir,” he said.
Separately, Manawa said the armed the SPLM-IO conference held in Pagak recently resolved that it is not possible to implement the Arusha Agreement without any negotiated peace settlement in Addis Ababa.
“There are issues that cannot be addressed by the Arusha Agreement like the issue of two armies and power-sharing,” he explained.
Al Bashir warns Juba
The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir has threatened to chase Sudanese rebels deep inside South Sudan territories in order to disarm them.
On Sunday, the Sudanese army clashed with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Nakhara area in South Darfur near the South Sudan border.
Bashir’s latest threats came while addressing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stationed on the Goz Dango area in South Darfur on Tuesday. Al Bashir advised the South Sudan government not to continue supporting the rebels.
“Sudan has been patient towards the South Sudanese and we offered them a sovereign state but received betrayal from them in return,” he was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, a source from Katila locality in South Darfur confirmed that at least four civilians were killed and six others wounded at Khor Shamam area during the clashes between the army and its allied militia against the Justice and Equality Movement on Sunday.
An armed group attacked Abu Haraza village in Katila Locality, according to the same source. The attackers reportedly torched several houses.
