The Secretary General of Sudan People Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), Regina Joseph Kaba, arrived in the Western Equatoria State capital, Yambio, for the training of the party’s secretaries in the state.

Speaking upon her arrival, she revealed that party secretaries were brought from all ten counties to attend the three-day workshop.

“The training will focus on the basic documents of SPLM-IO and we came as a delegation from the national level of our party (SPLM IO) to Yambio in Western Equatoria State,” she stated. “We came to do a party training on our basic documents and that is the basis of what we came and we will be here for Four days then we go back.”

On his part, Western Equatoria State Governor Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba said there is political space in the state and that anyone is free to conduct any political event without restrictions.

“The SPLM-IO gathered themselves from all the ten counties of Western Equatoria State in Yambio to organize themselves, their offices and to prepare for the big thing coming in the next two years, which is the election,” he asserted. “This is what is called political space and it is time for SPLM-IO and other political parties to organize and this state is free for anyone to come and engage in his or her political activities without restrictions.”

South Sudan was expected to hold its first General Elections in December 2024 according to the previously extended roadmap of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement. However, last week, the Transitional Government postponed the December 2024 General Election to  December 2026, citing a lack of preparedness, a move that was approved by the peace implementation monitors, the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) last Wednesday and passed by Parliament of Friday. The transitional period was also extended by 24 months.
