Agok Makur Kur, a rebel-appointed MP for the transitional South Sudanese National Legislative Assembly has criticized the current parliament for passing laws without their involvement.

In January, President Salva Kiir appointed 50 people nominated by the SPLM-IO armed opposition group to the transitional parliament, but the SPLM-IO parliamentarians have not yet taken up their duties and many of them remain outside the country.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, Agok Makur said their group will push for amendments of laws passed by Kiir’s parliament, especially the NGO bill, which was passed last week.

The SPLM-IO member predicted that a transitional government of national unity would be formed soon. He added that members of the new parliament will also be invited to start sittings.

Makur, who is also a renowned lawyer, pointed out that the formation of the transitional government was delayed due to an incomplete constitution. He explained that the peace partners have already agreed to expedite the formation of the transitional government

The government and opposition in South Sudan recently accepted a recent IGAD communiqué recommending suspension of the creation of 28 states and formation of a power-sharing government.
