The main South Sudanese opposition group said it wants government posts to be shared on an equal basis in the upcoming transitional period.

The main South Sudanese opposition group said it wants government posts to be shared on an equal basis in the upcoming transitional period.

“We want equal power sharing in the government because the purpose of peace is for South Sudanese to have a common understanding and reconciliation,” Manawa Gatkuoth, deputy head of the SPLM-IO committee for information, said in a statement to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday.

“We propose that the percentage given to the government should be reduced so that the other political parties can be given additional percentage to ensure a balance of power,” he said.

The top opposition official further said the proposal by the mediation team shows that there is a hope for the warring parties to negotiate in order to bring peace in South Sudan.

“But the power sharing proposal contradicts the idea that any party should not have a simple majority in government so we are proposing that the bigger percentage given to the government should be reduced,” he said.
