SPLM-IO official: woman wounded in clash near Leer town

A woman was wounded in an attack by government forces on Payak village in the west of Leer town in Unity State on Sunday evening, an opposition official said.

SPLA-IO spokesman in Leer County James Yoach told Radio Tamazuj that the government forces attacked their position at Piak area near Leer town, prompting their forces to fight back.

“On 19 June around 4:30, forces loyal to the govenment attacked our forces at Payak area, but we managed to defend ourselvies,” said Yoach.

He pointed out that clashes between the two sides resulted in the wounding of a woman, saying she was taken to a hospital run by MSF.

The opposition official said that the clashes also forced about 500 households to flee into the bush.Yoach claimed that they killed two government soldiers and wounded another in the standoff.

The SPLA-IO spokesman in the area also accused the government forces of violating the signed ceasefire agreement, while calling upon monitors to investigate the incident.
