South Sudanese rebels have described Wednesday’s meeting between their leader Riek Machar and a team from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on the revitalization process in South Africa as “fruitful.”

South Sudanese rebels have described Wednesday’s meeting between their leader Riek Machar and a team from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on the revitalization process in South Africa as “fruitful.”

Machar’s official spokesperson, Lam Kuei Lam, said in a statement on Thursday that Machar expressed his commitment to the IGAD revitalization forum, adding that the forum will revive the collapsed peace agreement.

Lam described the meeting between Machar and Workneh Gebeyehu, the minister of foreign affairs of Ethiopia as well as Ibrahim Ghandour, Sudan’s minister of foreign affairs as fruitful.

“The chairman and commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/A (IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon held a fruitful consultation meeting on Revitalization or Resuscitation of the August collapsed agreement with the IGAD high powered delegation led by H.E. Workneh Gebeyehu, the minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Ethiopia and H. E. Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour, minister of Foreign Affair of the Republic of Sudan,” Lam said.

However, the opposition official said the details of the meeting in South Africa would be released through the IGAD high level delegations.

On Monday, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) released a timetable for the revitalization forum to start consultations with South Sudanese leaders and citizens this month.
