SPLM-IO and govt to meet in Addis again over security arrangements

Peace mediators of the East African regional bloc IGAD will convene this week in Addis Ababa anoteher meeting between the South Sudanese government and rebels over implementation of the recent peace deal.

IGAD Communications Officer Haile Michael Gebreselassie reprotedly told Radio Miraya that the meeting will specifically focus on the implementation of the security arrangements including plans for eventually reunifying the forces of the two sides.

“We will have one of the most important meetings in Addis Ababa, whereby the parties will start planning the implementation of the agreement regarding the reunification of the forces,” said Haile Michael, as quoted by Radio Miraya.

He continued, “The government of South Sudan delegation will be led by the chief of negotiators, the chief of general staff and members of the unified command as well as the Inspector General of South Sudan Police and the chief of national security service will also participate in this meeting.”

The spokesman of the government Michael Makuei confirmed receiving the invititation to the event and that they accepted to attend, while complaining that the agenda for the meeting was not clear.

At the previous ceasefire workshop held in Addis Ababa, the SPLM-IO rebel group led by Riek Machar declined to sign the minutes of the meeting. This led to accusations that the group was not prepared to accept the security arrangements of the peace deal, while the SPLM-IO itself accused the government of being unwilling to demilitarize Juba.
