SPLM in W Equatoria confirms ban on generals in party positions

Manase Doboyi, the secretary-general of the SPLM party in Western Equatoria State (WES), says that the party does not allow any active SPLA soldier to serve in a party position in the state.

Manase Doboyi, the secretary-general of the SPLM party in Western Equatoria State (WES), says that the party does not allow any active SPLA soldier to serve in a party position in the state.

Speaking on Monday, Doboyi reiterated that the party does not allow any active military person to serve in the party or to hold a position in the party.

He explained the SPLM/A previously had united civil-military structures but since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 it has separated into the political party SPLM and the military SPLA.

“When you refer back to our first convention 1994 in Chukudum it was the initial program which SPLA came up with civil-military administration and all those working in that institution are both in SPLA and SPLM. But when we came to CPA arrangement most of them came from army,” he said.

“Now as we are a nation from 2011, we cannot allow someone just comes from the military and serves in the party, unless she or he resigned from that position then is allow to work but someone who is active in military by now is not really allowed to work in the office while serving in the military – that is not allowed,” the politician said.

Doboyi’s comments come just days after the Central Equatoria SPLM branch announced the same position, affirming that no soldiers are allowed to serve in party positions in the state.
