South Sudan’s government, SPLM-G10, and SPLM-In Opposition rebels presented their proposals on Tuesday for a new round of peace talks to take place in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
The three SPLM factions have been holding consultative meetings this week mediated by the East African regional organization IGAD after several months of stalled talks.
“During the closing meeting between the SPLM-IO chief negotiator and the IGAD mediators we presented our views with regard to the new round of talks. We presented our position on the federal system of governance and reform in all government institutions,” he told Radio Tamazuj.
The rebel official said their proposal also included security arrangements, a wealth and power-sharing formula, and accountability for those who committed war crimes.
Manawa confirmed that the proposed new round of talks will be discussed thoroughly at an extraordinary summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on the sidelines of an African Summit on 15 June.
He predicted that the IGAD mediators would close the constitutive meetings on Wednesday.
The next round of talks are to be mediated by the ‘IGAD-plus’ group of African, Western, and Chinese envoys. Previous talks led by IGAD collapsed in March without success.
