A group of SPLA soldiers shot dead two men in Kaya town just shortly after they arrested them driving their commercial truck, relatives of the deceased said.

The killed men were a driver and his conductor who drove a commercial truck in the area.

The incident occurred on Thursday leaving many people paniced in the area.

They were going toward town to take tea before proceeding with their trip when they were arrested and shortly thereafter shot dead by the soldiers.

The killing raises fears among the local population already traumatized by the ongoing conflict in the area. Due to the ongoing conflict, many civilians in Yei River State say they are targeted by soldiers and extrajudicial killings have become common.

“These soldiers will finish us if they continue like this,” one civilian said.

Fighting erupted on 8 July in Juba between guards of President Salva Kiir and his then First Vice President Riek Machar. Rebels and government troops have since been clashing in various parts of the country, with perceived civilian supporters often deliberately targeted.
