South Sudan’s SPLA-Juba faction has dispatched armoured tanks to the apparently quiet Western Equatoria State, displaying the tanks on Friday in the state capital.

The three new military tanks and other weapons belonging to the faction’s sixth division were displayed alongside marching SPLA-Juba troops in Yambio Freedom Square.

Chief of Operations Brigadier Mobil Malual Dial is quoted by the Catholic radio station in the town as saying the newly acquired equipments are for defence and protection of citizens and property.

He said the army planned to dispatch ten tanks to Western Equatoria, but only three arrived so far. Brigadier Malual also reportedly described Western Equatoria a peaceful state free from tribalism.
