SPLA-Juba beats Magwi civilians, burns homes after soldier's barfight

Clashes between SPLA-Juba troops and locals in Owiny Kibul, Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria have left one dead and over thirty injured following a barfight involving a soldier.

According to traditional leader Chief Michael Obeni, the clashes took place after a soldier tussled with a bar owner over an unpaid bill.

“The soldier refused to pay for the alcohol he had taken from a woman who is the owner of the bar, prompting the husband of wife to quarrel with the soldier. So during the fighting between them the wife came and knifed the SPLA soldier," Obeni said.

SPLA-Juba soldiers then engaged in retalitary attacks on a nearby market and village, beating civilians and setting 136 houses on fire.

Obeni said about 30 citizens have been wounded and one SPLA soldier was killed, while three soldiers were hurt by stray bullets fired by police trying to quell the chaos.

“The wounded citizens who have come back home from the bush can reach 30, you find some of them are hurt in the hand and head,” he said.

The traditional leader said both soldiers and citizens have been arrested.
