Clashes between the SPLA and SPLA-In Opposition broke out in two areas near Leer town in South Sudan’s Southern Liech State on Sunday morning, a rebel official said.

James Yoach, SPLA-IO spokesperson for Unity state, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that their forces fell under heavy attack by government forces yesterday morning at Thonyor and Pilliny areas near Leer town.

He further said that one SPLA-IO soldier was killed and six others injured, claiming they killed 10 government soldiers during the clashes.

Radio Tamazuj couldn’t reach government officials in the area to comment on Yoach’s claims.

Situation in Northern Liech

Separately, Lam Tungwar, Minister of Information in the proposed Northern Liech State, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the security situation returned to normal following insecurity in earlier October.

The official claimed that a number of foreign agencies decided to return to the area after they evacuated their employees, saying the government forces are controlling the area.

Tunwar pointed out that all the SPLA-IO forces in Unity state are commanded by the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai.“There are no armed opposition forces in Leer and Bentiu areas, those who are there are criminals who are looting properties of citizens on the streets,” said Tungwar.
