SPLA-IO general reports delay in establishment of cantonment sites

Gen. James Koang Chol, a member of the armed opposition on the CTSAMM ceasefire mechanism, says identification of cantonment sites for SPLA-IO forces in Equatoria and Bahr al Ghazal regions has not yet started.

Gen. James Koang Chol, a member of the armed opposition on the CTSAMM ceasefire mechanism, says identification of cantonment sites for SPLA-IO forces in Equatoria and Bahr al Ghazal regions has not yet started.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Koang revealed that the Joint Monitoring and Ceasefire Committee (JMCC) is still waiting for South Sudan’s presidency to write a permission letter on assessment of the cantonment sites in Equatoria and Bahr al Ghazal.

“There is no official letter up to now so that we can go to the areas where the forces will be assembled in Bahr el Ghazal and Equatoria because you cannot start in Upper Nile only, but we are still waiting, I think the letter will be written soon,” said Koang to Radio Tamazuj.

He attributed the delay to logistical reasons in the presidency. When asked about salaries of the SPLA-IO forces, Koang said the issue is also connected to cantonment sites.

In late May, South Sudan’s Council of Ministers passed a resolution approving establishment of cantonment areas for the armed opposition forces in Equatoria and Bahr al Ghazal.
