SPLA-IO general questions demilitarization of Juba

Gen. James Koang Chol, a member of the armed opposition on the CTSAMM ceasefire mechanism, has expressed scepticism about the full demilitarization of South Sudan’s capital Juba.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Koang revealed that CTSAMM ceasefire mechanism has not yet submitted its report on transportation of SPLA forces about 25 km outside Juba as stipulated in the peace agreement. The opposition general doubted full transportation of SPLA troops from the city.

“The CTSAMM mechanism has not yet brought its full report on whether the forces have moved out or not, but we are sure that those forces are still inside Juba,” said Koang.

SPLA and SPLA-IO agreed last year to partially demilitarize Juba, limiting the number of government troops allowed in the city and permitting the newly appointed vice president Riek Machar to bring a limited number of bodyguards to the city when he takes office.

Machar has repeatedly said that he will not return to Juba until security arrangements for Juba are completed.
