A South Sudanese armed opposition faction (SPLA-IO) commander has urged citizens of Tambura State to forgive the movement for all crimes its forces might have committed.
Speaking during peace celebrations in the state capital on Sunday, James Naando said forgiveness is key for the peace deal implementation.
In September last year, South Sudan’s arch-foes signed a revitalized peace agreement to end the country’s civil war that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
Naando, who led the SPLA-IO team at the occasion, said all roads linking Tambura to other states were now open for all citizens to use.
He warned citizens against taking up arms to fight the government.
“The agreement says if you want to become a soldier, join the SPLA IO or SSPDF [South Sudan Peoples Defense Forces] and you will be recruited depending on the policy and qualification,” said Naando.
He urged senior SPLA-IO officers to distance themselves from violence.
On his part, the state governor, Patrick Raphael Zamoi said his administration is ready to implement the revitalized peace accord.
He vowed to cooperate with the SPLA-IO for the safety of citizens.
Zamoi, however, warned citizens against involvement in any conflict.
The peace day celebration was held under the theme, “Peace for all”.
