SPLA-IO commander accuses govt forces of arresting 25 civilians in Wau County

The SPLM-IO in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal has accused government forces of arresting several citizens from Angu Angu, Brenji and Taban areas and taking them to Wau town on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, one person was reported killed and two injured in the most recent clashes between government and opposition forces.

Brig. Augustino Charles, a commander of the SPLA-IO in Western Bahr el Ghazal, said government forces have attacked their positions in Angu Angu, Brenji and Taban areas, saying they were forced to withdraw from these areas.

“The first battle started in Angu Angu round 6:00 a m. It was very surprising. We tried to withdraw from the area with some citizens,” said Charles. He added that government forces arrested 25 citizens and took them to Wau town.

Radio Tamazuj was unable to reach the army spokesperson for comment.

Separately, the spokesman for SPLA-IO in Unity state, James Yuaj, said government forces have attacked their positions in the eastern part of Leer County. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Yuaj said the attack which continued until Wednesday afternoon forced civilians and some NGOs working in the area to flee.

“Yesterday government forces attacked our forces. There were many casualties. Many civilians and NGOs fled to different parts,” said Yuaj.
