The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) Division Six (6) in Maridi under the command of William Ayang on Thursday released 36 people who had been arrested for allegedly supporting an armed group led by James Kabila.
They were released from the army barrack and handed over to the county authority. The 36 men and one woman were arrested either in the bush or in Maridi town while others were brought from Yambio or Ibba. Some had stayed for more than three months in the army prison.
Speaking during their release, Maridi County Paramount Chief James Bakindo thanked the division commander and governor for freeing the young men.
Maridi State Governor Africano Monday said the step is part of the implementation of the peace agreement that was signed by President Kiir last August.
Chiefs, elders, members of parliament, police representatives and the army attended the release.
