SPLA army to release 33 detained Maridi youth today

Sudan People’s Liberation Army officials confirmed they will release 33 youths arrested over the last four months in Western Equatoria state’s Maridi County.

Sudan People’s Liberation Army officials confirmed they will release 33 youths arrested over the last four months in Western Equatoria state’s Maridi County.

SPLA spokesperson Col. Philip Aguer said the youth had been arrested in connection with the ambush of SPLA soldiers in the area following earlier violence between cattle keepers and local residents in the area.

A local court acquitted the youth and Aguer said they should be released today.

Former Western Equatoria state Governor Joseph Bakosoro had previously told Radio Tamazuj that 36 local youth had been arrested in connection with the ambush, but Aguer said the number was only 33.
