Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly, issued a compelling call for an immediate halt to the bloodshed in Tambura County, Western Equatoria.

Speaking at a press conference in Jubon Friday, Nunu expressed deep concern over escalating communal violence that has displaced over 50,000 people and claimed numerous lives in the county.

“I condemn in the strongest terms possible the regrettable attacks on civilians, including the targeted assassination attempts on individuals such as three local chiefs and youth leaders, some of whom sustained injuries,” stated Nunu. “These attacks are unacceptable, causing immense suffering to our people and undermining peaceful coexistence in Tambura.”

Nunu described the violence in Tambura as marked by killings, kidnappings, disappearances, and property destruction. She called upon authorities to investigate the killings thoroughly and hold perpetrators accountable. Additionally, Nunu appealed to the abductors to release the Catholic priest, his driver, and other civilians being held hostage.

“I urge concerned authorities and peace partners to condemn this act and swiftly take appropriate measures to protect innocent lives. It’s crucial that the relevant authorities conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Additionally, I call upon the state government to intensify their efforts and fulfill their duty to safeguard lives and property, thereby restoring security in the country. I implore the state authorities to immediately cease these heinous attacks and secure the release of the abducted Catholic priest Fr. Luke, his driver, and other civilians held hostage by the attackers,” Nunu explained.

She emphasized the importance of concerned authorities taking immediate action to protect civilians and restore peace and stability.

Nunu highlighted that the conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 50,000 people, representing approximately 80 percent of the population. “The ongoing attacks on innocent civilians in Tambura County have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with over 50,000 individuals forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in churches, schools, and the UNMISS temporary base in Tambura town. Therefore, I appeal to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission to mobilize humanitarian organizations to provide timely and unhindered assistance to displaced victims affected by the crisis,” she stated.
