South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has issued a decree relieving Manase Lomole Waya from his position as the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) chairperson and appointing Gatwech Peter Kulang as the new chairperson.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has issued a decree relieving Manase Lomole Waya from his position as the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) chairperson and appointing Gatwech Peter Kulang as the new chairperson.

The newly appointed head of the Commission had served before as undersecretary at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management. The decree was read out over state-owned television SSBC Friday evening.

The RRC is a government agency which coordinates and regulates South Sudan’s humanitarian activities.

Kiir also issued a separate decree removing and appointing officials in Upper Nile and Jonglei states.

South Sudan is governed by a transitional government created after a 2018 peace agreement between President Salva Kiir, opposition leader Riek Machar and other political figures.

The controversy surrounding the timing of general elections, combined with the incomplete implementation of the peace agreement, poses significant challenges to the country’s democratic transition.
