South Sudanese women from across the nation on Wednesday have gathered in Juba for a two days peace conference aimed at updating women on the status of implementation of the peace agreement and the process of reconciliation for women in the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, Chairwoman of South Sudan Women General Association Zeinab Yassin has welcomed the participants saying that now peace has come in the country and it is the role of women to send the message of peace to the grassroots.

The event was held at Nyakuron Cultural Center in partnership with the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission and UN Women under the theme “Women Strive for Unity in Diversity.”

“It is the women of South Sudan who gave the peace because we never take any gun to shoot anybody. We ask for peace and here for peace and unity of our people,” Yassin said during her opening remarks.

Yassin said every woman in the country is still wearing black clothes in sorrow of the ongoing situation. She said therefore peace and reconciliation are important among the people of South Sudan.

The two conference has brought together 450 women from across the country to brainstorm on various issues regarding the implementation of the agreement, and the contribution of women nationwide in developing the women’s agenda.

It is expected that First Lady Mary Ayen Mayardit, UN SRSG Ellen Margaret Loj, Rebecca Nyandang de Mabior, Angelina Teny and Awut Deng Achuil will participate and give presentations on the last day of the conference.
