South Sudanese refugee families living in Al-Kharasana area in Sudan’s West Kordofan state have complained that they are living in poor conditions.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, several refugees complained of problems such as diseases and lack of access to better services in the camp.
The camp accommodates thousands of South Sudanese refugees who fled conflict in their country.
David Kuony Maker, a refugee, complained about lack of medicines, water and tents. “We spent more than two years without medicines. Concern Worldwide organization did not bring medicines, so we sometimes buy medicines from private pharmacies,” he said.
According to Maker, no tents or tarpaulins were distributed since 2017. He called on organizations to provide shelters so they can protect their children from rain and sun.
Veronica Diu, a female refugee, said they are facing deteriorating humanitarian conditions.” We don’t have money to buy biscuits and other foods to our children, so many children are suffering from malnutrition,” she said.
She further said maternal complications are on the rise among mothers and pregnant women because of poor services. “Pregnant women are suffering due to the lack of nutritious foods in the camp,” she said.
Veronica pointed out that they have been experiencing shortages of water in the camp for more than a month.” Our cistern is dysfunctional, we get water from places that are far away from the camp,” she said.
Aid agencies which provide services in the refugee camp could not immediately be reached for comment.
