South Sudanese refugee drowns in Kakuma camp

A 50-year-old South Sudanese refugee woman died after drowning in a stream at Kakuma refugee camp last week, the deceased’s relatives confirmed.

Speaking to Radio Tamazj on Friday, the relatives said Athoi Atem had gone to fetch water and drowned in a stream after heavy rains.

John Mariak, a camp official, confirmed the incident.

He said since last week, the area has experienced heavy rains which filled up streams thus hampering the movement of citizens.

Established in 1991 under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Kakuma refugee camp, which is located at Kenya’s border with South Sudan, is home to approximately 165,000 refugees and asylum seekers of over 18 different nationalities.
