South Sudanese Pound falls further against US dollar

The street rate for US dollars in South Sudan's capital city Juba has increased in recent days to 13.2 SSP last week while the official rate at banks remained 3.16.

Traders in the black market in the other states were exchanging at 13.2 to 13.3 pounds to the dollar.

Several traders confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that the prices of commodities at the market will also increase due to unfavourable prices of the hard currency.

South Sudan has witnessed high prices of commodities at the market since fighting erupted in December 2013. Some observers attribute the high prices of dollar to the drop in oil production.

They said the unfavourable exchange rate makes it difficult for them to import goods.
