A South Sudanese man died on Tuesday after sustaining serious injuries when his house was attacked by armed robbers in the wee hours of Tuesday morning in Kampala, activist says.
The 45-year old man identified as Duop Thabach Rom was a South Sudanese refugee living in Kampala’s Mpererwe neighbourhood.
Ter Manyang Gatwech, the Executive Director of International Youth for Africa, a south Sudanese civil society based in Kamapla told Radio Tamazuj that the late has left behind five children.
“The people came broke the door and stole everything including the television. People were sleeping inside, and then they sprayed the house with some chemicals to keep them asleep. They then went to the second door, where Mr. Duop woke up and when he tried to confront them, they then used a knife to cut his right hand,” he said.
“They then started beating the man with the sticks and stools. They called us at around 6 in the morning but as we tried to rush the man to hospital he died on the way,” he added.
Manyang condemned the attack and called on the Ugandan government and the UN refugee agency UNHCR to protect South Sudanese nationals living in Uganda.
In mid-August, three South Sudanese family members were brutally attacked at their home on Monday morning in Kampala.
Manyang urged the Ugandan government to bring perpetrators to justice.
