WAD MADANI / KHARTOUM - 30 Oct 2013

South Sudanese citizen arrested over involvement in September demonstrations

The accused is Puoc Lazarus, a graduate of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the Abu Haraz College of the University of Gezira.

In an appeal through Radio Tamazuj, Achuai Lazarus, the detainee’s sister stated that Puoc was arrested by the Sudanese police after his Sunday prayer on 25 September. She stated that her brother is innocent.

"My brother went to Wad Madani only to process his certificate of the Abu Haraz college. Suddenly our family heard that he had been arrested there over involvement in the Sudanese protests," Achuai explained.

"Many political detainees have been released but the authorities did not release him until now.  That is why we are anxious about him for more than a month now," she added.

According to a source, the accused was transferred from Wad Madani to Khartoum during the demonstrations that broke out after the Sudanese President, Omar al Bashir announced the removal of fuel subsidies on 22 September.

The detainee’s family has requested the South Sudan embassy in Khartoum to intervene in order to release him as soon as possible.

Multiple sources from Khartoum told Radio Tamazuj that representatives of the South Sudan embassy in Khartoum have asked permission to visit the accused but the Sudanese authorities have refused the requests thus far.
