South Sudan youth should avoid violence, CEPO says

After a rise in hate speech, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is calling for a culture of peaceful-coexistence and rule of law in South Sudan.

After a rise in hate speech, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is calling for a culture of peaceful-coexistence and rule of law in South Sudan.

Edmund Yakani, the executive director of CEPO said that social media should be used for peace, and not incitement.

“Stop championing for violence among the communities of South Sudan,” CEPO said in a press release.

The call comes after a flare in tension between Dinka and Equatoria youth groups in South Sudan, sloth of whom appear to have advocated for violence. Recently, insecurity on the Yei-Juba road resulted in the death of at least 20 people, mostly from one tribe.

Both the government and SPLM-IO have created an investigation into the incident, and Yakani stressed that both should be able to investigate the incident before acting.

“Violence never gains at any cost,” Yakani said.
