South Sudan cargo tops the list of good to be auctioned by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya’s premier Business Daily (BD) reported Friday.
The paper said there were 149 containers stuck at the KRA inland depot in Nairobi, 75 of which were destined for South Sudan.
The shipment consignments at risked of being auctioned include two belonging to the United Nations, said BD.
The scenario, the paper explained, pointed to the logistical nightmare confronting the world’s youngest but troubled state, currently teetering on the brink of a civil conflict.
BD said KRA last Friday issued a gazette notice that it would start auctioning the goods, should the owners fail to collect them from the inland container depot in Nairobi in the next 30 days.
The taxman, the paper added, said the abandoned cargo would be sold by public auction for five days starting June 16.
The landlocked South Sudan relies heavily on Kenya’s port of Mombasa for its imports.
