South Sudanese students studying in Egypt on government scholarships have spoken out against what they call "dire" living conditions.

Anyang Philip, a South Sudanese student studying at Zagazig University, said: "Many South Sudanese students in Egypt are currently facing challenges because of poor living conditions.”

He pointed out that the students cannot afford basic necessities due to lack of stipends. The university student urged the government to cover their living expenses in Egypt.

Michael Wani, a South Sudanese activist, said university students on scholarships in Morocco, Ethiopia and Egypt have been complaining about economic hardships.

He appealed to the National Legislative Assembly to deliberate on the issue of university students abroad.

In July 2015, South Sudan students occupied the embassy in Cairo in protest against delayed payment of allowances.
