Vice President James Wani Igga has traveled to regional capitals to ask for help to save South Sudan from economic collapse as the currency continues to drop in value. He invited leaders of three East African nations to a conference in Juba this week.

South Sudan’s Central Bank has been printing money to cover government spending deficits, Radio Tamazuj reported last month. The money supply has increased by billions, meaning that there are more South Sudanese pounds in circulation and each pound has less value than before.

The country’s vice president visited Nairobi, Kenya, since Thursday, after a stopover in Kampala, Uganda. He explained in a press release on Friday that he would also visit Rwanda.

Igga said that one of the reasons for his visits was “to invite my counterparts in the region especially Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda to participate in the upcoming conference planned to take place on the 5th and 6th of May in Juba. The intention is to strategize together with the countries in the region over the economic trend in our country.”
