South Sudan’s prominent rebel leader, Riek Machar, has congratulated the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali, on his election as the new Prime Minister.

Machar, in his congratulatory message on April 2, hoped that the new Ethiopian leader will play great role as the new chairperson of IGAD to help bring peace to South Sudan.

“It is our hope that during your tenure the conflict in South Sudan shall be resolved, particularly that you are the chair of IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government as well as the head of the High Level Revitalization Forum for the peace process,” partly reads Machar’s letter.

The South Sudanese rebel chief urged the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia to accord the SPLM-IO opposition group an audience.

Machar reiterated his movement’s commitment to restore peace in South Sudan by revitalization of the 2015 peace accord.
