South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has confessed that his country is broke.
Kiir said this on Thursday last week after ending a two-day official trip to Khartoum where he pledged with his Sudanese counterpart not to allow the saboteurs to cause tensions between their countries.
President Kiir said South Sudan cannot offer any support to the Sudanese rebels, citing his country’s troubled economy.
“We do not support the Sudanese rebel movements, and if you come to Juba, you will not find them,” he said.
“What would we give them if they go there? The employees have gone unpaid for six months and even the army was not paid. If you go there you will find soldiers moving without vehicles. Where can I get vehicles, weapons and uniforms for the Sudanese rebels? We do not support any rebels,” he explained.
South Sudan, where oil revenues make up nearly 98 percent of the budget, has been reeling under an economic crisis due to the ongoing civil war.
