South Sudan’s Kiir declares permanent ceasefire

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir yesterday issued a republican order for the declaration of a permanent ceasefire to implementa the compromise peace agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir yesterday issued a republican order for the declaration of a permanent ceasefire to implementa the compromise peace agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan.

Kiir, who doubles as commander in chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), directed the SPLA Chief of General Staff Paul Malong Awan to implement the execution of the order from midnight 29 August.

The president ordered the SPLA forces to cease any military operations across South Sudan, while remaining  vigilant in their current locations and positions and that they should fight back only in self-defense when attacked.

SPLM-IO rebel leader Riek Machar together with SPLM-G10 leader Pagan Amum signed the peace deal on 17 August but Salva Kiir concluded the peace deal by sighing it in Juba on 26 August.
