South Sudan’s Kiir appoints new SPLM secretariat

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has issued a number of orders appointing sector heads of the national SPLM secretariat and advisors, barely a month after dissolving the SPLM secretariat last month.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has issued a number of orders appointing sector heads of the national SPLM secretariat and advisors, barely a month after dissolving the SPLM secretariat last month.

The reorganization comes after Kiir said Friday that members of the SPLM faction still loyal to him stand a chance of being ‘bought’ by political rivals if the party does not become more organized.

The National Liberation Council of the SPLM faction under Kiir convened a special session at which it declared vacant national secretariat positions and authorized him in his capacity as the chairman of his faction to appoint new faces on recommendation of the new acting secretary general.

In an order broadcast by the South Sudan television on Monday, Kiir appointed former petroleum minister Lual Achuek Deng as advisor for research, training and planning while placing former deputy minister Marial Awuou as advisor for finance and economic affairs.

Mangar Marial Amerdit was made advisor on political affairs and mobilization while John Dabi was appointed head of administration and organizations. Achuil Malith Banggol retained his position as head of syndicated and popular Organizations, as did Antipas Nyok as head of political affairs and mobilization and Bol Makueng Yol as head of Culture, information and telecommunications.

Adhieu Martin Manyiel became the deputy head of administration and organizations as Anthony Joseph was made deputy head of syndicated and popular organizations.

Henry Wani for Research was named head of Training and Planning and Charles Abdu became head of finance and economy. Angui Diing Diing replaced Suzanne Jumbo as the head of external affairs and Nifana John Bol for social affairs.

At the time of the dissolution of the secretariat last month, concerns were raised about the fate of the Arusha Agreement to unite the party, but SPLM officials said it would not be affected.

SPLM Political Bureau Member Daniel Awet Akot said in an interview on Tuesday that reorganization and transformation of the SPLM will be the main priority of the leadership in the coming period with the view to uniting the people.

The SPLM leaders, he said, intend to enlighten people on plans to reorganize and transform the leadership. “The national liberation council has resolved recently to embark on transformation agenda so that our people reunited. This requires new faces in the leadership and felt it should start at the secretariat,” said Awet.

He said the new leadership will now start with civic education trainings targeting youth, women and members of the general public about the plans and activities of the SPLM in coming period.
